Ethernet Performance and Throughput

Ethernet performance is sometimes hard to measure as its hard to generate the traffic.  Mikrotik uses a method with at least 4 routers.  Two to run the bandwidth test application, and two others run a wireless or Ethernet link between them.  This is done to prevent the CPU usage of the testing application altering the end results.  The PoweRouter 732s, with the 3Gig processor, does not have this issue, we have generated 5.9 Gbit of traffic with still under 60% CPU load.

As you see in the image above, we bonded 6 of the 7 gigabit Ethernet ports together, creating one extremely fast multi-gigabit pipe.  Generating traffic on both ends we get a max of 5.9 gigabit in one direction.  Both directions, we see a comparable 3.1 to 3.3 gigabit each direction. 

Wireless Links

The PoweRouter is capable for high-speed long-distance wireless links.  These include un-licensed and licensed links, frequency depending. 

The tests below are all done on our test bench.   Their is a number of 2.4 gig, and 5gig Radios in the area.  

In this link, we have created a Dual N-Stream link, this is two Mikrotik R52H Radios in each PoweRouter 732. 

In this test, our signal levels are ideal, in the -50 to -55 range. 

This shows TCP bi-directional tests reaching up to around 55Mbps.  Average speeds in the 52Mbps Range.

CPU load was minimal.  This was not running though the link, but generated on each Router. 

Historical Information:  In the past, Mikrotik RouterOS was limited by the speed of the processor you used. Generating this traffic on one box would max out the CPU causing lower than actual test results.  Since the PoweRouter 732s are not maxing out the CPU time, these tests are more accurate than in the past.
